Planting a Trillion Trees to Fight Climate Change Scopes and Challenges

The best way to fight global warming and climate change is planting a trillion trees across the world. Trees absorb carbon dioxide by this process, they can help to stop rising temperatures around the world. Recent scientific research of the Swiss scientists , the global tree restoration potential found that the planet has nearly 3.5 million square miles (9 million square kilometers) to plant trees. Six nations that has the maximum land to grow new trees are Russia, Canada, United States, Australia, Brazil and China. Using, Google Earth, the researchers identified the areas that could support more trees, while leaving room for people and crops.

Drone based tree planting

Obviously, planting a trillion trees will take a long time. However, drone based tree planting can reduce that time. Drone based tree planting are also very effective. The drone flies over the area where it wants to plant trees, picks the best location to plant and then fires a pod filled with seeds into the ground. Theoretically, 10 drones can  plant an impressive 400,000 trees a day. In Myanmar, more than six million trees have been planted using drone.

Planting a trillion trees with seed bombs

Innovative design of seed bombs are very effective for planting trees in large areas. When the biodegradable seed bombs are dropped above the vacant lands, it disassembles in mid-air and the seeds are then dispersed over a large area. The drones first fly over an area to map it, collecting data about the topography and soil condition that can be combined with satellite data and analyzed to determine the best locations to plant the seeds. Then the drone fires biodegradable seed bombs—filled with a germinated seed and nutrients—into the ground.

Deforestation and CO2 in Atmosphere

Deforestation is one of the negative elements that is slowly killing the Earth. Reduction of the forests cause wide-reaching problems like soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, water cycle disruption, greenhouse gas emissions, changes in the climatic conditions, and loss of biodiversity. The two main source of CO2 in atmosphere are fossil fuels and deforestation.   According to another 2018 study, mangrove deforestation is responsible for 24 million tons of CO2 emissions each year.

Deforestation and Singing Bird Population

Deforestation reduces the singing bird populations drastically. Deforestation lead to some species becoming extinct. Tropical forests are the most biodiverse ecosystem globally, however, extensive loss of tropical forests driven primarily by the expansion of agricultural land threatens the survival of forest species.

Summary:

The study estimated that over the decades, those new trees could suck up nearly 750 billion tonnes of heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is about as much carbon pollution as humans have emitted in 25 years. The younger trees remove more carbon from the air.  Tree planting is the the cheapest climate change solution and the most effective, the study report said.

The benefits of planting a trillion trees are many. It will not only reduce the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stop rising temperatures around the world but also improve biodiversty and increase the singing bird populations in the world.
