What is Kanakadhara Stotram?

The Kanakadhara Stotram is a revered Sanskrit hymn composed by the great philosopher and theologian Adi Shankaracharya. It is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. The stotram is a prayer for the removal of poverty and the bestowal of abundance. It is said that reciting this hymn with devotion can invoke the blessings of the Goddess, bringing prosperity and happiness to one’s life.

According to the legend, Adi Shankaracharya composed this stotram as a spontaneous prayer to Goddess Lakshmi when he witnessed the impoverished condition of a Brahmin woman who had offered him a single gooseberry as alms. Deeply moved, Shankaracharya prayed for her wealth, and it is believed that the Goddess showered her with golden gooseberries, thus the name Kanakadhara meaning “stream of gold”.

Story of Kanakadhara Stotram

The Kanakadhara Stotram was composed by the great philosopher-saint Adi Shankaracharya in a moment of divine inspiration, rooted in a profound incident that showcases the power of devotion and compassion. According to tradition, during his early years as a young ascetic, Shankaracharya was wandering and seeking alms to sustain himself, as was customary for spiritual seekers. One day, he arrived at the doorstep of a poor Brahmin woman’s home in a village. This woman, despite her abject poverty, had nothing to offer but a single dried amla (gooseberry) fruit, which she gave to Shankaracharya with utmost devotion and humility, not wanting to turn away a guest empty-handed.

Moved by her selflessness and sincerity, Shankaracharya was deeply touched. Recognizing her dire circumstances, he spontaneously composed the Kanakadhara Stotram, a heartfelt hymn invoking Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. With fervent devotion, he prayed for the Goddess’s grace to alleviate the woman’s poverty. As he chanted the melodious verses, a miracle unfolded: Goddess Lakshmi, pleased by Shankaracharya’s pure-hearted prayer, appeared and showered a stream of golden amla fruits into the woman’s home, transforming her poverty into abundance. This divine event gave the stotram its name, “Kanakadhara,” meaning “the stream of gold.”

The story underscores the transformative power of compassion, devotion, and the divine grace of Goddess Lakshmi. It serves as an inspiration for devotees, illustrating that sincere prayers and selfless acts can invoke the Goddess’s blessings, bringing prosperity and removing hardships. The Kanakadhara Stotram continues to be revered as a potent hymn, capable of attracting wealth and divine favor when chanted with faith and purity of heart.
