Sacred Story & Origins

Malyavan and Pushpavati were cursed by Indra to become pisachas (ghosts) due to their infatuation during a dance. They unknowingly fasted on Ekadashi and remained awake all night chanting Vishnu’s names. Lord Vishnu’s mercy and the power of Ekadashi restored them to their heavenly forms.

The significance and story of Jaya Ekadashi are described in ancient scriptures like the Bhavishyottara Purana and Padma Purana, narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthira.

In heaven (Devaloka), a gandharva named Malyavan (or Malyavana) and an apsara named Pushpavati fell in love and became distracted during a performance before Lord Indra. Angered by their indiscretion, Indra cursed them to become pisachas (demons/ghosts) and suffer on earth in the Himalayas.

As pisachas, they endured great hardship. On the day of Jaya Ekadashi, cold and hungry, they took shelter under a peepal tree, ate no food, drank no water, and stayed awake all night in misery—unknowingly observing the Ekadashi fast perfectly.

Lord Vishnu, pleased by this accidental observance, appeared before them, freed them from the curse, and restored their celestial forms. They returned to heaven, where Indra welcomed them with honor. This story illustrates the immense power of the Jaya Ekadashi vrat—even unintentional observance can liberate one from severe curses and lower births.
